Its that time of the year again. Photo Plus Expo, the largest photography and imaging conference in the region, is upon us. I have attended the conference, at the Javits Convention Center, in New York, for many years now. The conference has been my best tool in making my purchasing decisions. If I need and want new equipment, there is a great chance I will be able to test it there. I also get to enjoy the company of good people and geek out on photography.
Here is what I am looking forward this year when I attend the Photo Plus Expo.
Meeting up with my photography friends
One of my favorite things about Photoplus is meeting up with all my Photography friends. There are a few of them I only speak to online, during the year. At Photo Plus we get to meet up, share a coffee or three, photo walk and generally have a damn good time.
I’ve attended the the Photo Plus Test Drive, New Product Preview + Networking Event, for years now. It’s my favorite place to learn about new products at the conference and get a feeling of what I really investigate. By making new products accessible before the rush, this part of the conference allows for more casual info gathering.
This year the conference will have a lot of Photo Walks. The areas around Photo Plus have been improved by the Hudson Yards Projects. It will be great to get together with people I know, and don’t know yet and see New York’s changes. I will attend the On-Location Portraiture photo walk on Thursday Morning and Learning Headshots : In Front and Behind the Camera photowalk on Friday morning. I will also attend more casual photo walks with my friends during the entire conference, for coffee!
FujiFilm Medium Format
At Photokina Fujifilm announced it’s GFX 50s. I have to admit this camera gave me ‘feels’. I have not felt like this about a camera since I got my Nikon D700. Large sensors are what I enjoy using and I have alway wanted to work with a digital medium format. The GFX 50s, if priced right may have me switching to Fujifilm. At Photoplus, I hope to get my hands on this camera , expect to hear more about this from me.
I have always found the keynote speakers to be interesting at Photo Plus Expo. Honestly I am not familiar with the speakers, but I get to learn something new by checking them out, so I will. Speaking this year
•Rock/Photography Legends Graham Nash / Mark Seliger Discuss Careers and Friendship;
•VII Photo Photographers Celebrate 15th Anniversary, Share Views on Storytelling and Integrity
•National Geographic Photographers Establish Global Effort to Protect Oceans and Marine Life
The 2nd Annual Lucie Technical Awards
I want to attend the the Lucies, but due to a conflict I can not, but I cant wait to see the winners.
The Lucie Technical Awards aim to honor the large and small companies, as well as the individuals who have advanced the photographic industry in a given year. All inclusive, these awards intend to encompass such things as cameras, lenses, lighting, and accessories, to papers, printers, software and more.
This year, Photo Plus Expo has something new, Intensisve classes. If you really want to focus on one photography topic, this is for you. I am thinking about checking out the Wednsday tracks. You can find info on the the intensives here.
Wednesday, October 19 – 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Thursday-Friday, October 20-21 – 1:30-6:30 p.m.
For attendees who really want to concentrate on one specific area of learning and are prepared to dig in for a full day of activities, PhotoPlus has created its Intensive Pre-Conference classes just for you. These classes each focus on a single topic including Photoshop, Lightroom, Lighting, Editing & Sequencing for Print, Wedding, and Final Cut X all instructed by industry leaders. These 5-hour sessions will provide an opportunity to learn more than the basics and come away with extended knowledge you can put to practice immediately. -From the PhotoPlus Expo
Exploring new Gear
Every Year, there is alway new gear. I want to see as much as I can as always. This year, though, I defiantly want to check out the new Panssonic G85, Nikon D500, New Sigma lenses. Checking out new gear is the reason I go to Photoplus. It is the best place to get a hands on and decide what I will want to try again in the future.
