When you have progeny, there is one thing you have to do, expose them to new things, constantly. This lets them see what the world has to offer. So when my good friend and awesome photographer type person thingie Daryl Meek informed me of a Gem and Fossil expo in NJ, I took the kids, breaking up their typical weekend activities for something a little different. It was also an excellent chance for a little we35 research.
Location NY / NJ Mineral, Fossil, Gem & Jewelry Show at the NJ Convention & Exposition Center (a.k.a. “NJ Expo Center”) located in Raritan Center.
Observation The show had a lot to see. Colorful minerals to the left of me, fossils on the right, and a variety of different things in between. The kids had fun exploring the expo collecting little trinkets, asking questions and acting silly. However this was not the ideal photography experience for me. This was one of the rare occasions where the 35mm lens felt limiting. There were moments where I wanted to focus close up on an item and could not. With my Nikon 35 I could ad a closeup filter but I did not have one for the Sony. The Nikon 35mm also focuses a tad bit closer on its own as well. I did not carry any other lenses as well. I would of loved to have a macro lens with me at the expo there were just some things I wanted to get close to. Anyhoo while the experience was not perfect I did enjoy myself. I did get most of the images I wanted and worked with in my limitations the best I could.
