The mirrorless camera world is constantly evolving leaving the old guard, like Nikon and Canon in the past. The latest tool to catch my interest in the mirrorless world is Touchless Shutter Camera app recently released by Sony. With this app you hold your hand over the eye sensor to release the shutter without touching the camera. I recently nstalled the app on CambotMk II aka My Sony A7 to see if it was a decent tool or a novelty…
Location/Setup I decided to test the Touchless Shutter Camera app during an early morning walk. It was quite and dark, perfect for a long exposure, as I walked to a stream running through my town. I used the environment as my tripod and set up for some 35mm (I never take my35mm lens off due to my we 35 research) 30 second exposures. I loaded the app and made a mistake right away…
Observations With the app you only turn it on when you are ready to use it. I was pre setting my exposure while getting close to my spot and mistakenly triggered the shutter. When I actually did want to capture frames the app worked flawlessly. I thought this was going to be a novelty but I see this app as a fascinating tool.
Findings For the A7 Sony’s Touchless Shutter Camera app does not completely replace a remote however it does enable you to capture a longer exposure with a minimal amount of tools. As I do my photowalks in the early morning this will be used more. The -Touchless Shutter Camera app make impromptu long exposures much easier. I hope Nikon is paying attention. If they hope to lure me back with a mirrorless camera this is one of the things that will make it a tough sell.
Compatible Cameras Sony a7, a7R, a7S, a7II, a6000, NEX-6, NEX-5R, NEX-5T, HX400V, HX60V, RX100III
This application supports bulb-shooting mode with Sony a7S and a7II – to activate bulb-shooting with those cameras, hold your hand over the eye sensor once to start and again end the exposure. Requires built-in or optional finder device with eye sensor. Pop up the finder when using this application with a camera model which has a pop-up electronic finder
Before launching the app, make sure the [FINDER/MONITOR] or [FINDER/LCD Setting] that toggles image display targets is set to Auto.
