Musing the Art of Coffee Photography

Posted on June 21st, 2010 by gservo

While planning out my Portfolio of Images I took a minute to look at what my focal points are, in photography. One thing that is Pretty Obvious is Coffee. In recognizing the fact that I truly enjoy coffee in way to many facets, it is natural to like to craft coffee imagery.

My Favorite Coffees, now come from the Specialty coffee sector of the world. The Gourmet and/or Artisan Coffee people I have had the fine pleasure of talking to have been nothing my nice. I have been learning a lot , from them . One of the best things, as a photographer is that the specialty segment is the most rapidly growing portion of the coffee industry. In the U.S., specialty coffee has increased its market share from 1% to 20% in the last 25 years. There are many photography opportunities out there and I hope to capture a piece of it.

Well It has begun, my bike riding season. To start it off this season, I tested out my idea for a bike my riding pack. Its very simple, I place my small low pro bag inside with camera, and a can of coffee and my small iron tea cup of doom.

A Part of my Anything Goes Photo Photu-fu is exercise, Early in the morning, with good light. So I could not resist carrying a Camera. Cambot MK3 with a 35mm f/1.8 g lens . The Camera was very safe in the pack and I was riding on the road, not on a trail, i have another camera for that.

I chose to have Some Japanese some kan kōhī or Canned Coffee, which is is ubiquitous in Japan. I like canned coffee in the spring/summer while traveling. Its great to have a few cans on long bike rides along with water also due to the fact it’s easier to store. I tend to make coffee and user a themas but canned coffee is great in a pinch. This Barrel-shaped can by Dydo is just a very decently but cheaply brewed black coffee as the can says. I has decent flavor, I like it better than anything Starbucks have ever put in a can.
It was a good morning.

RBC NYC/Coffee house photo-Fu

As I look back on this coffee Geek trip, me all alone in the early, early, morning in down town Manhattan as the rain lightly fell, I can’t help but think this would have been fun with a coffee geek friend or two.

20100326-PhotoFu0004

At least I get to share my journey with them through my photography. This was my First coffee house pictures session. I only traveled with 35mm lens, it is great in these situations. I tried shooting only with f/2.8 f/4 f/5.6 & f/8, 1 or two f/1.8 shots may have got in

20100326-PhotoFu0033

First of all, RBC NYC had very good coffee, not the best i have ever had, but very good indeed. It was a good moment, taking that first sip of the skillfully prepared flat white. (Originating from New Zealand, a flat white is a coffee beverage prepared by pouring steamed milk from the bottom of steaming pitcher over a single shot (30ml) of espresso..)

Flat white is not something I would usually drink but this was a special occasion. I also had a cinnamon scone, which was a bit pricy, but tasty. Overall a Nice menu, very clear and it was all about the coffee.

20100326-PhotoFu0043

The Nice people at the helm of RBC , greeted me, a bit warily at first, but that’s typical of New York. Light pleasant conversation was had.

I appreciated the decor, one big table with comfortable chairs. It was a great design choice Would I go there again, yep, it’s a nice hideaway for me, a nice place to read it seems.

It was a good trip, glad I did it, I think I will be doing more trips like this over the coming months. iTs going to be a good summer for coffee.
